Microsoft has a new generative AI-powered object eraser in its Photos app, replacing the existing ‘Spot Fix’ with the updated feature named ‘Generative Erase.’ This innovative functionality, detailed in a recent Microsoft blog post, empowers users to seamlessly eliminate distractions such as background objects and visual clutter from their photos.
According to the tech giant, Generative Erase surpasses its predecessor, Spot Fix, by allowing users to erase larger areas and deliver more realistic results after removing objects. Besides introducing the Magic Eraser, Microsoft has also revealed additional AI editing features like Blur Background, Remove, and Replace Background within the Photos app.
To leverage the Windows Photos Generative Erase feature, follow these steps:
- Open the desired image for editing and click the ‘Edit Image’ button on the top toolbar.
- Choose the Erase option, adjust the brush size, and brush over the objects to be removed, waiting a few seconds for the magic to happen.
- Users can disable Auto Apply and manually mask the desired areas for enhanced control or simultaneous removal of multiple objects.
Microsoft notes that the Generative Erase feature is currently accessible to Windows 11 users participating in the Insider program. However, the company has plans to extend this functionality to Windows 10 devices as well. Additionally, Microsoft has committed to introducing more AI editing features, such as Remove and Replace Background and Blur Background, to the older operating system.
